A spearmint shampoo is a nice way to wake up in the morning shower. Ours is a lavender spearmint shampoo: cool spearmint for the fresh part, lavender for the soft part, and a little patchouli to hold them together. Here is what is in the bottle and how we use it.

Why spearmint smells so fresh in a shampoo

Spearmint is the gentler cousin of peppermint. Peppermint is sharp and icy. Spearmint is sweeter and softer, closer to the smell of a fresh mint leaf you pinch in the garden.

That softness is why we pair it with lavender. On its own, lavender can feel sleepy. Spearmint lifts it up. Patchouli, an earthy oil, sits underneath so the scent lasts through the shower instead of vanishing in the first rinse.

Ingredient

Spearmint oil

An essential oil taken from the leaves of the spearmint plant (Mentha spicata). It smells sweet, green and minty, softer than peppermint.

One of three essential oils in our lavender spearmint shampoo and conditioner, with lavender and patchouli.

What is in our lavender spearmint shampoo

Our shampoo starts with water and a few gentle cleansers that foam and lift away the day: decyl glucoside, sodium cocoyl isethionate and disodium laureth sulfosuccinate. Then come the things that make it feel good. Glycerin draws in water. Panthenol, a form of vitamin B5, is a classic hair-care ingredient. Aloe rounds it out.

The scent comes last on the list: lavender oil first, then spearmint, then patchouli.

In plain words: the first ingredients are the biggest part of the bottle, and the last ones are the smallest. So in our lavender spearmint shampoo there is more lavender than spearmint, and just a touch of patchouli.

You may wonder why a soap maker does not use soap for hair. True soap reacts with the calcium in hard water and forms soap scum, and hard water means more product is needed to get hair clean 2. For hair, gentle cleansers simply rinse out more easily.

Lavender spearmint conditioner: the other half

Our lavender spearmint conditioner has the same three oils, so the scent carries from wash to rinse. It is made with shea butter, sea kelp, oat protein and silk amino acids, to soften and detangle. Smooth it through the lengths and ends, leave it for a minute, and rinse.

Same scent, wash to rinse

Shea butter, sea kelp, oat protein and silk amino acids, with lavender, spearmint and patchouli. Use it after the shampoo, mostly on the ends.

Bigger bottles for a shared shower

If the whole house uses it, our lavender spearmint shampoo also comes in a 32 oz bottle 3. It is the same shampoo with fewer trips to the store, and it can refill the smaller bottle you keep in the shower. The conditioner comes in a 32 oz size too.

It is a good fit for families, roommates and anyone who goes through a bottle fast. Keep the big bottle under the sink, and top up the shower bottle whenever it runs low.

Questions

What does lavender spearmint shampoo smell like?

Fresh and soft at the same time: cool, sweet spearmint up front, calm lavender underneath, and a light earthy note from patchouli.

Is spearmint shampoo the same as peppermint shampoo?

No. Spearmint is sweeter and gentler than peppermint, which smells sharper and icier. Our shampoo uses spearmint, together with lavender and patchouli.

What is in your lavender spearmint shampoo?

Water, gentle cleansers (decyl glucoside, sodium cocoyl isethionate and disodium laureth sulfosuccinate), glycerin, panthenol, aloe, and lavender, spearmint and patchouli oils. The full list is on the product page.

Do I need conditioner with spearmint shampoo?

It depends on your hair. If yours tangles or feels dry at the ends, our lavender spearmint conditioner has the same scent and is made with shea butter, sea kelp and oat protein to soften and detangle.
