Natural Hand Lotion Without Mineral Oil: What Is in Ours
Our natural hand lotion has no mineral oil or petroleum: shea, cocoa butter, oat and aloe, in lavender, citrus, lemongrass or Naked.
A good hand lotion should sink in, not sit on top. Our natural hand lotion is made with shea butter, cocoa butter, oat and aloe, and it is a hand lotion without mineral oil or petroleum. Here is what goes into it and how to pick a scent.
What makes a hand lotion natural
Every lotion is the same idea: water and oils, held together so they do not separate. What changes is which oils.
Many lotions lean on mineral oil or petroleum jelly, which come from petroleum. We leave those out. Our moisture comes from plant oils and butters instead: avocado oil, coconut oil, shea butter and cocoa butter. They feel rich going on and soak in without that greasy feeling.
So if you want to know what a lotion is really made of, read the first five or six ingredients. On ours, after water, you will find avocado oil, coconut oil, an emulsifying wax that keeps it all mixed, glycerin and shea butter.
What is in our natural hand lotion
Every scent of our hand lotion shares one base. Shea butter and cocoa butter give it a rich feel. Avocado and coconut oils help it spread. Glycerin draws water to your skin. Oat, aloe, panthenol (a form of vitamin B5) and vitamin E finish it off. A few helpers keep it smooth and fresh in the bottle.
No mineral oil, no petroleum, no synthetic detergents.
Cocoa butter
The pale fat pressed from cacao beans, the same beans that give us chocolate. It is firm at room temperature and melts when it touches warm skin.
One of the two butters in every scent of our hand lotion, alongside shea butter.
Hand lotion in four scents, or none
Pick by what you like to smell:
- Lavender: lavender oil with patchouli and lemongrass. The one we keep on the nightstand.
- Citrus: orange oil with lemongrass and grapefruit. Light enough to wear all day.
- Lemongrass: lemongrass oil and nothing else. Clean and green, good after washing up.
- Naked: no essential oils at all. Easy to wear under perfume.
The lavender also comes in a small travel tube for the purse, the car or the gym bag.
Lavender, in your bag
The same lavender hand lotion in a pocket-size tube for the car, the desk or the gym bag.
When to use hand lotion
The best time is right after you wash your hands. Pat them almost dry, then smooth on a small amount while your skin is still a little damp. Work it over the backs of your hands, between your fingers and around your nails.
Keep a bottle by the kitchen sink and one by the bed, and a travel tube wherever you spend your day. Hands feel soft when the lotion is always within reach.
Night is a great time too. Smooth on a little more before bed, when your hands can rest. Cold Michigan winters, dish duty and lots of hand washing all leave hands wanting a little extra, and a bottle that is close by is a bottle that gets used.
